In my quest to improve individuals lives, I have become more and more enamored with Aromatherapy. The use of plants and herbs has become a daily part of both my and my family’s life.
We use oils to preserve health and wellness, return us to health and wellness when we are a bit under the weather, elevate mood, bring a feeling of calm (particularly at bed time) and promote focus and attention (great to use when it’s time for homework).
In sharing my experiences with oils with friends, clients and acquaintances, I developed six blends which address many of the issues we face in today’s world:
Balance Bodyworks Aromatherapy Blends
Each Balance Bodyworks Aromatherapy Blend is hand-crafted with intention using only the highest quality therapeutic essential and carrier oils.
Each Balance Bodyworks Aromatherapy blend contains the highest recommended concentration of essential oils - 5%. Our carrier oil is jojoba. The oil is non-allergenic and contains only the pure expeller pressed extract of the jojoba seed.
Oils are available for purchase in 2 oz. amber bottles with droppers. The droppers allow for easy use and application of each blend. Blends are also available in .35 oz. roll-ons for convenient travel. Suggested recommendations for use can be found on each bottle. Additional ways to enjoy your oils can be download in PDF format from our site.
Aromatherapy is the art of healing various ailments - physical, mental and spiritual - with the help of nature through the use of essential oils. The essential oils are highly concentrated due to their extraction from roots, seeds, barks and flowers of plants.
First, we’ll address the science of smell and its affect on the brain. The use of therapeutic essential oils to restore your health occurs as a result of the essential oils ability to stimulate the brain which triggers a reaction. The sense of smell (or olfaction) is our most primitive sense and is located in the same part of our brain that effects emotions, memory, and creativity. Humans are able to distinguish over 10,000 different odor molecules. When inhaled, these odor molecules travel into the nose and interact with odor receptors. The odor receptors then transmit the information to the olfactory bulb, which is located in the brain’s limbic system. The limbic system also controls memory and emotions, and is connected to the pituitary gland and hypothalamus area that controls the release of hormones that affect our appetite, nervous system, body temperature, stress levels, and concentration. Because of the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier, essential oils when inhaled, can have immediate affects on the body unlike traditional prescription medications.
Secondly, we’ll address the body’s reaction to stress. When stress occurs whether it is due to life circumstances, an injury or illness, an individual’s nervous system is affected. As a result, a cascade of events occurs, namely the production of hormones that in turn trigger the production of immune fighting agents. These stress-triggered hormones alert the immune system to quickly respond.
Continuous levels of stress, known as chronic stress, can actually suppress the immune system, decreasing its vital role in warding off diseases and infections. Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, moodiness, irritability, insomnia, muscle tension (including migraines), digestive disorders, higher susceptibility to colds and flu and just a general feeling of unpleasantness.
There is scientific evidence which indicates that our sense of smell has a crucial effect on our overall health and wellbeing. Numerous studies have been conducted on the efficacy or Aromatherapy. Due to its ability to truly affect individuals, Aromatherapy is used in industrial, retail and health care settings. For example, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, doctors use fragrance to reduce anxiety during medical testing. Doctors from Duke University Medical Center are treating women in menopause with fragrances to alleviate depression and mood swings. There are numerous examples available of Aromatherapy's ability to heal.
Aromatherapy makes use of this and is able to heal multiple physical and psychological issues. It strives towards attaining a balance in the body, soul and mind for overall well-being. How’s that for natural healing?
While essential oils are typically safe to use, there are some conditions for which the use of specific oils are contraindicated. For example, a number of oils are contraindicated for pregnancy. Oils in this category include chamomile, cinnamon, fennel, ginger, jasmine, juniper, myrrh, peppermint, rose, sage and eucalyptus.
If you have any questions at all regarding the use of therapeutic oils, please do not hesitate to contact Balance Bodyworks directly, 321.441.6078.
At Balance Bodyworks, we use 100% organic HobaCare Jojoba oil. The oil is non-allergenic and contains only the pure expeller pressed extract of the jojoba seed. Jojoba is the closest plant oil to what our own bodies oil glands actually produce which is why it is absorbed so readily into the skin. This ability to be readily absorbed enhances not only your skin but the efficacy of the essential oils added to Balance Bodyworks blends. Your skin will feel soft, smooth and conditioned, not greasy, oily or sticky. It is especially useful to therapists and clients with sensitive skin. Everyone, no matter what his or her skin type, benefits from using the product.
